New Zealand's Koanga Institute aims to preserve heritage seeds, develop regenerative food models, repair a 15-hectare farm damaged by Cyclone Gabriel, and seeks funding for infrastructure and educational programs.
Koanga Institute is a registered Charitable Trust whose purpose is to
- save our heritage food plants in New Zealand
- develop regenerative models for food production
- to create inspirational models of integrated land use
- use all of the above to inspire and educate others
Koanga educates and inspires people from all over the world on how to live regeneratively and sustainably with their land, wherever that may be and educates people on how to grow nutrient dense food within their own families and communities .
Koanga also works tirelessly to preserve the diversity and resilience of our heritage seeds in New Zealand and has taken on many more heritage lines of staple seed, such as Kumara, that would otherwise be lost.
One of the goals of Koanga is to continue to develop and repair a 15 hectare(previously a dormant agricultural block) that we have called The River Block that sustained considerable damage by Cyclone Gabriel in Feb 2023. In more detail this will include:
- A small self-reliant dairy farm for local consumption of milk products and the secondary production of poultry, eggs, and pork.
- The expansion of the fruit tree nursery on the River Block that currently exists in a separate location on Koanga Institute.
- The production base of the koanga heritage perennial collection including Kumara, potatoes, garlic, strawberries etc.
- a research garden showing that it is economic to grow vegetable on a local scale in a way that regenerates its resource base, and can be used as a model anywhere.
- An extra isolation garden for heritage seed production
- To be a model for extensive riparian protection
Koanga Institute has already started some of this development, and we are seeking funds to continue with the development and restoration of this block including:
- New fencing above the flood level established by Cyclone Gabriel to enable stabilisation of river banks via plantings
- Planting the fragile riparian areas protection and biodiversity servies
- roading to support the new developments
- A greenhouse to support the research garden and the kumara collection
With the funding provided for this we can continue to sustain the Koanga Charity mission and serve our local and global communities.
