WHAT IS NFT.STORAGE
NFT.Storage is an open-source long-term storage service designed for off-chain NFT data (like metadata, images, and other assets). Our foundational service, NFT.Storage Classic, is a free product widely used by numerous marketplaces who upload and retrieve NFT data through the NFT.Storage Gateway. The new version of NFT.Storage, launched in early April 2024, introduces a small one-time fee for endowment-backed long-term storage on Filecoin, highlighting our commitment to the sustainable preservation of NFTs.
TRUSTLESS VERIFIABILITY
Data is content addressed using IPFS, meaning the URI pointing to a piece of data ("ipfs://…") is completely unique to that data (using a content identifier, or CID). Embedding these IPFS URLs and CIDs in NFTs and their metadata does not itself guarantee permanent access, but thanks to NFT.Storage’s technology, the associated content remains retrievable through the NFT.Storage Gateway and long-term Filecoin storage. This infrastructure aims to mitigate the risk of losing access to NFT data and the IPFS CIDs make it possible to verify trustlessly what content an NFT is associated with.
DATA REDUNDANCY
NFT.Storage Classic manages data through dedicated servers facilitating IPFS availability and decentralized Filecoin storage. Since IPFS is a standard used by many different storage services, it's easy to redundantly store data uploaded to NFT.Storage on any other IPFS-compatible storage solution from pinning services, to your local IPFS node, to other storage networks like Arweave or Storj. And as time goes on, NFT.Storage will increasingly decentralize itself as a public good!
PUBLIC GOOD
Since launching in April 2021, NFT.Storage has evolved into a trusted public good for NFTs, hosting over 660TB of data from our vibrant community. We're excited to have recently announced and launched the next phase of NFT.Storage, building on our solid foundation. This includes the evolution of the NFT.Storage product focused on long-term preservation of NFTs, alongside the newly formed NFT.Storage DAO, to foster greater community involvement and support sustainable NFT preservation.
