A marine biologist creates educational content highlighting Mexican Caribbean reef fish to raise awareness about reef conservation through social media, using scientific rigor and audiovisual art.

Fish Behaviour is a project that started in 2020, aiming to communicate the importance of reef fish using the social media by creating educational content, photographs showcasing species of fish from the Mexican Caribbean, and videos that raise awareness about reef conservation. The goal of this project is to share, spread, and expand knowledge about reef fish to the general community, using audiovisual art and scientific rigor as evidence. A part of continuing this project is bringing the reality faced by coastal communities to the city, highlighting biodiversity, issues, and potential solutions, all based on my experience, judgment, and vision as a professional and human. Crista Ramirez Ruiz, Marine Biologist, diver, science communicator, and nature photographer, has been working with reef fish for 9 years. She started sharing knowledge about this group due to their economic, ecological, and social importance. She focused her master's research on cleaner fish and the health of the reef ecosystem in the central-southern region of Quintana Roo. She is currently working on a reef fish conservation project that involves the Mahahual community and future conservation tools for decision-making. Photography has been her tool to showcase the reality of changes in the reef ecosystem, as well as to document biological interactions, identification, and characteristics of reef fish.
