We seek funding for AGGRA training to enhance coral reef monitoring, aiding reef restoration and promoting responsible tourism in Cozumel. Your support ensures ecosystem conservation and community livelihood.

Hello! My name is Cristina Mota, and I am a biologist with a Master's degree in sustainable tourism management, as well as the Sustainability Coordinator at Sand Dollar Sports. I am deeply passionate about protecting and preserving the ecosystems of Cozumel Island, particularly the coral reefs that serve as the foundation of our diving activities and represent an invaluable source of biodiversity. Over the years, our company has invested in impactful projects, such as artificial reefs and coral restoration initiatives like Coral Cozumel Conservatory, that has the goals of increase coral cover, marine biodiversity and coastal relicience. Due to this an aditional goal is to mitigate negative impacts of human activity and promoting responsible tourism.

Over the past seven years, we have observed significant progress in reef recovery from the impacts of hurricanes and human activities. However, it is crucial to enhance systematic monitoring to obtain comprehensive information about reef components, including corals, benthic organisms, and fish populations.

To achieve this goal, we are raising funds to participate in the AGGRA (Atlantic and Gulf Rapid Reef Assessment) training methodology course, which will take place in Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, at the begining of may 2025. These funds will help cover travel and accommodation expenses. This training will enable us to develop specific skills to identify and measure marine organisms, as well as gain a deeper understanding of site conditions. Armed with this knowledge, our sustainable tourism team—comprising biologists—will actively and scientifically contribute to reef conservation, ensuring the long-term health of these ecosystems and evaluating the effectiveness of coral reef restoration projects.

By supporting this initiative, you will directly contribute to the conservation of this vital marine ecosystem, which benefits biodiversity and sustains the primary source of income for the people of Cozumel. Thank you for believing in our mission and supporting this important cause.
