Our Alliance formed to permanently protect 35 million hectares of highly biodiverse rainforests currently under relentless threat. We are steered by the leadership of 30 Indigenous nations whose territories comprise the majority of the Amazon Sacred Headwaters bioregion. Our journey of visioning the future that we want, began in 2017 and culminated in the creation of a Bioregional Plan 2030 – a living blueprint for a bioregional approach for an ecological transition inspired by Indigenous stewardship philosophy of ‘Buen Vivir’ (collective Wellbeing). The plan is holistic, inclusive, and transformative, seeking to address five shared bioregional objectives: advancing Indigenous rights and territorial governance, improving living conditions, stopping deforestation, restraining extractive industries, and conserving and restoring ecosystems.
Here, Indigenous Peoples are playing a central role in advancing forest stewardship. We are not mere beneficiaries of this Alliance; we are the co-creators and protagonists, around which an ecosystem of trusted allies has been assembled—an innovation in itself. Through this Alliance, we are joining efforts to mobilize significant financial and technical resources, to amplify our voices, secure the recognition of our rights, and safeguard our territories. We are aiming to legalize 9 million hectares of indigenous lands, restore 8 million hectares of degraded forests, strengthen indigenous governance, foster alternative livelihoods, and create financial incentives for transitioning from an extractive to a standing forest bioeconomy. Our collective mission is urgent and our intention is to create a model that can be replicated in river basins in all 9 Amazon Basin countries and rainforests everywhere.
