DeCO2Risk
Research project examining the role of carbon insurance in encouraging carbon reduction investments and fostering the growth of carbon trading markets, assessing the potential of decentralized solutions.

Hi Gitcoiners, Nice to see you!

I’m Qianni(@WuLiumu), very lucky to introduce my research proposal—DeCO2Risk to you here.

  1. What is the project about?

Currently, it is a research project focusing on studying the impacts of carbon insurance on the effects of promoting carbon reduction investment and carbon trading market expansion, and disseminating more information or knowledge on how carbon insurance plays a role in combating climate change.

  1. Motivation

Our proposal focuses on studying the impacts of carbon insurance on the effects of carbon reduction and carbon trading market expansion. There has been some judgment on this by previous insurance experts that carbon insurance would help scale up the carbon market by addressing the inefficiencies, lack of transparency, and transaction risks faced by carbon credit buyers in existing carbon trading markets, so that it would help us to combat climate change. However, at the current stage, there needs to be more research to discuss or prove carbon insurance will. For example, in our current study, inappropriate compensation way will lead to even more carbon emissions, even if carbon insurance can lower the entry of technology investment . Therefore, deeper research deserves to be done. This is intended to accelerate the expansion of the carbon trading market, facilitating the entry of more private capital into the carbon removal market, as well as the involvement of more carbon removal solution providers in addressing CO2 emissions. As many of you know, the ReFi movement has opened many people's eyes to the potential of Web3 or blockchain to combat climate change, but the current works are not enough. More ReFi application scenarios need to be discovered and explored. As all we know, the carbon trading market(especially the VCM), as a market instrument for carbon removal solutions, needs to be expanded urgently in order to attract more carbon removal solution providers, but the current VCM faces a huge crisis of confidence. Carbon insurance may play a big role here, but is the traditional insurance model the most appropriate and fastest way to go? Not necessarily. There are a series of problems with traditional insurance, such as non-transparency, slow claims settlement, and high insurance costs, which hinder the further development of the carbon insurance market. For some standardized and easily quantifiable risks, decentralized insurance may play a bigger role as it is more transparent and efficient than traditional insurers. Based on the above information, we believe that it is worth exploring the impact of carbon insurance on emissions reduction and whether decentralized carbon insurance(or blockchain-based carbon insurance) can have better effects. Moreover, it is also necessary for more people to see the role of carbon insurance as well as blockchain in combating climate change!

  1. What kind of impact does it aim to have?

Climate Impact. I understand the impact can not be limited in a specific area, like academic, Web3, insurance or VCM. So I hope my research can reach different people and connect them, for example, to let carbon credit buyers understand that carbon insurance may address the risks they face, such as price, quality, or quantity; to encourage traditional insurers to consider developing carbon insurance products or to consider using blockchain technology; and to allow decentralized insurance projects in the Web3 field to attempt to develop decentralized carbon insurance. But all of this is predicated on having more reliable content and research conclusions, and the leading insurance experts and existing research have given me confidence.

  1. How will you publish and evangelize your outputs?

All outcomes of the decentralized carbon insurance protocol development process (including mathematical model analysis, interview results, case studies, etc.) will be shared openly through scientific publications, popular science articles, and community sharing. Ideally, we will collaborate with climate change-focused nonprofit communities, carbon credit development or trading projects to promote the real-world adoption of the research output We will seek sponsorship and reach out to experts in the field as much as possible.

  1. Why do I need funds? Maybe a reward for my research works. In practice, it is difficult to get funding for projects that are still being explored; it's also not easy for a relatively new researcher like me to get government funding, so I came here_web3 space.

I hope to receive more support! not only funds. Thanks.
