We’re developing a blockchain-based buy/sell app to enhance local food security, streamline logistics, and boost production. We aim to support small communities using decentralized technology and local relationships.

DeFood is short for the Decentralized Food Security Network (DFSN), which explores ways to decentralize food security both in the physical realm, by expanding localized food production, processing and distribution, and also in the virtual realm, using Blockchain technology as the basis for improved revenue streams to farmers, dMRV of of carbon sequestration from regnenerative agriculture, and support localized trade and digital currencies.

We've previously put on a systemic Food Summit for the local community, and are pursuing a number of different food security initiatives from local emergency preparedness to tackling local bylaws that create obstacles to local agriculture. Our newest project is developing a blockchain-based buy/sell app for local food that will create trust in the system, streamline logistics and reduce costs, boost local food production and accommodate associated uses like barter and selling food from home gardens.

So far we've written User Stories for buyer and seller, have 2 guinea pigs (a local restaurant owner and local farmer, both of whom have experience with app developments) and have had a preliminary conversation with the owner of our local grocery store. We're also in touch with the University of British Columbia about their LiteFarm app, which looks like it could be a good source of open-source code -- the project is advantageous to them because their app doesn't have a sales portal. Finally we're talking with Astral Protocol about the use of geospatial data and general blockchain integration.

We definitely need further funding to get into the build-out of the app, but once completed we want it to be a useful model for all small communities, that will fit into and support existing idiosyncratic local relationships rather than forcing overworked and underpaid humans to fit into the app. The timing is critical, as extreme weather, global crop failures and other factors put food security at risk for small communities (and soon for large ones).
