Disaster Action Network
Enhancing forest fire preparedness in Turkey through community education, digital risk mapping, stakeholder engagement, and promoting institutional readiness for effective disaster response.

The project is focused on enhancing community preparedness for forest fires in Turkey through preventive measures and increased awareness. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the project's objectives and intended impact:

Objectives of the Project: Increase Awareness and Preparedness: The main goal is to educate the community about the risks of forest fires and improve their ability to respond within the critical first 15 minutes of a fire outbreak. This early intervention is crucial in preventing the escalation of fires into disasters. Develop a Digital Risk Map: By collaborating with locals to identify high-risk areas, the project aims to create a digital map that pinpoints these areas. This map will then be shared with relevant institutions like the Forestry Management, energy companies, and local governments to facilitate preemptive actions. Stakeholder Engagement and Coordination: It involves various stakeholders including local governments, community members, and public service providers to ensure a coordinated approach to disaster management. This includes holding community meetings and engaging young people to bolster interest and participation in disaster preparedness. Intended Impact: Enhanced Community Resilience: By involving the community directly in the identification of risk areas and the development of the risk map, the project seeks to foster a community that is more resilient and better prepared for potential disasters. Institutional Readiness: Through the dissemination of the digital risk map to relevant authorities, the project intends to improve the readiness of institutions to act swiftly and effectively in the event of a fire, thereby reducing the potential damage and enhancing the overall disaster response framework. Sustainable Practices and Advocacy: The project also aims to develop sustainable practices that can be maintained over the long term, ensuring that the community remains vigilant and prepared. Additionally, it seeks to advocate for more substantial funding and resources for preventive measures at the national level, where currently only a small fraction of the budget is allocated to such initiatives. Overall, the project seeks to create a proactive and informed community that can significantly mitigate the risks and impacts of forest fires through early detection, preparedness, and coordinated response strategies.
