Summer gathering to co-create decentralized technologies, seeking support to sponsor diverse technologists tackling real-world issues with decentralized solutions at a camp in Northern California.

Support technologists using decentralized tools to address challenges on the front lines

This summer, the DWeb Movement will gather a globally diverse community of builders and dreamers in nature to tackle real-world challenges and co-create the decentralized technologies of the future.

Our event is called DWeb Camp and 130+ stellar individuals from 33 countries applied this year to come as DWeb Fellows.

Some fellows build community mesh networks in rural communities without internet. Others build p2p mapping tools with indigenous people in the Amazon to defend their land against loggers.

We ask your support to bring as many of these inspiring technologists and organizers to our camp in Northern California as possible.

setting up the mesh network

DWeb Camp was a place to share questions, experiences, concerns and joys regarding our relation to technologies...For almost a week, people from diverse walks of life had the opportunity and privilege to give ourselves the time and place to get together and weave ideas towards the decentralization of the internet. – 2022 DWeb Fellows, Dana Beltrán Barbosa & María Alvarez Malvido from their article, Rethinking technologies. Dreaming collectively at DWeb

In order to build a truly equitable decentralized web, we need to lift up those who work with and for under-resourced communities.

That’s why we created the DWeb Fellowship Program.

We believe tools are always better when the people who use them have a seat at the table. Our Fellows work on real-world problems around the world, with and for marginalized communities. They bring unique knowledge, skills, and on-the-ground experience to DWeb Camp for an exchange of ideas and technologies. We believe that bringing people together physically in nature to make lifelong ties is a crucial path to building better decentralized technologies for everyone.

Ben Tairea of Ahau.io

Former DWeb Fellow, Ben Tairea (above), is the founder of Ahau.io, harnessing decentralized technologies that preserve and share cultural records and narratives from tribal and Maori people on servers that they own and control. Funds raised through this grant will go towards covering Fellows’ cost of travel, accommodations, and Camp registration.

What is DWeb Camp?

Since 2016, the DWeb and its sponsor, Gatherings for Good, has organized in-person and virtual convenings around building a better decentralized Web that actualizes principles of human agency, mutual respect, and ecological awareness. Our events have attracted thousands of coders, organizers, artists, academics, and policymakers from around the world. They have been a key meeting place for people to share their projects and ideas and build lasting collaborative relationships.

DWeb Camp 2022 was our last large gathering. We are now organizing our third camp, taking place June 21-25. 2023 in Northern California. But global inflation and setbacks in the tech sector have made it harder than ever for global technologists to participate.

Your support will ensure greater equity, diversity, and opportunity for deserving technologists and organizers.
