Encointer - Digital Community Currency Platform
Encointer provides a decentralized payment network and companion apps that enable any community to establish their own local currency and prove their personhood. The currency can be distributed at regular intervals, similarly to a universal basic income, and used to stimulate the local economy. Anyone can join a community and receive the currency — the only requirement is that you attend gatherings to verify that you are a real person. These are some of our key project goals:
- Sybil resistant Web3 services: By enabling communities to prove their personhood through physical gatherings, Encointer can enable new Web3 services such as Sybil-resistant airdrops and verification ticks on decentralized social media accounts.
- Inclusion: Encointer seeks to make Web3 more accessible by removing the financial barrier to entry through a mechanism similar to a universal basic income.
- Proof of personhood: Encointer allows people to access digital assets and Web3 even if they do not have an official state-issued ID and cannot open an exchange account as a result. 850 million humans are currently excluded from Web3 participation because they do not possess a state-issued ID.
We have already developed a fully functioning network on Kusama, and apps for Android and iOS. In addition, we have active community currencies up and running in Zurich, Switzerland and Green Bay Wisconsin. With this grant, we want to work with local communities to help establish additional communities globally.
