Project advocating for blockchain-friendly EU regulations with a focus on financial inclusion, innovation rights, decentralized service recognition, fair competition, and privacy technologies adoption. It involves policy work, education, and cooperation with lawmakers.

The European Crypto Initiative supports innovative & innovation-friendly regulation, adapted to decentralised applications that leverage blockchain technologies.

We fight for the financial inclusion of all humans, the inviolable rights of innovators building and operating decentralised services, a level playing field for open, permissionless networks, the legal recognition of decentralised governance, and the wide-scale adoption of privacy-preserving technologies,

What is happening?

📚 EU-wide regulations, such as the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) and the AML Package - containing the Transfer of Funds Regulation (TFR) and the Anti-Money Laundering Regulation (AMLR), have massive implications on socio-technological innovation, monetary freedom and financial privacy. These regulations come with heavy operational burdens for crypto-asset service providers and even DeFi developers.

  • End of June 2022, the TFR and MiCA's texts were finalised on a political level.
  • We work closely with EU regulators to ensure a good implementation of MiCA, TFR and AMLR.
  • TFR & AMLR do not consider blockchain-specific issues, in particular privacy implications.
  • The EU Comisison is working on the new laws addressing DeFi.
  • EUCI is continuously engaging with new regulations on new laws like Data Act and DAC8.

Our mission is to:

⭐ EDUCATE. Share the latest updates, trends and development of the ecosystem with policymakers.

⭐ ADVOCATE. Propose amendments to regulatory proposals which support European crypto industry actors.

⭐ COOPERATE. Work with other initiatives and industry bodies to amplify shared positions and gain support from lawmakers and the broader private sector.

EUCI’s Goals:

🎯 Ensuring adequate DeFi Regulation. Outreach to the EU institutions responsible for MiCA's interpretation & implementation. Work "on the ground" with and educate the competent authorities on a member-state level.

🎯 Shaping the understanding of AML’s impact of crypto. Sending out official opinions about the impact of the proposed regulations on the industry. Fighting to DeFi outside of AMLR's scope by providing valuable context to the regulators. Actively participate in the upcoming Trialogues and directly discussing the issues with the responsible policymakers in the EU institutions.

🎯 Continuous monitoring and lobbying on relevant upcoming regulations: for example, on tax data exchange, data act, smart contracts, NFTs, data center sustainability (PoW), open finance and other related policy movements.

Policy work:

Days after the MiCA release, the EUCI founders kicked Events off an informal task force to rectify the worst mistakes of MiCA. We haven't stopped since. 250+ touch points with dozens of MEPs, workshops, including with 100+ MEPs and substantial position papers yielded results. Learn more about our Policy Work
