The hackathons will challenge participants to develop innovative ReFi solutions that align with the Ecological Benefits Framework, which outlines six key areas of focus: air, water, soil, biodiversity, equity, and carbon.

ReFi is a rapidly growing field with the potential to revolutionize the way we finance environmental and social initiatives. The Hack ReFi hackathon is an exciting opportunity for developers, entrepreneurs, and anyone interested in ReFi to come together and collaborate on innovative solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges.

Hackathons Alignment With International Framework

The Ecological Benefits Framework (EBF) is a holistic framework designed to assess and report the ecological benefits created by businesses, governments, nonprofit projects, and more. It emphasizes the positive impacts on the environment and ecosystems. Here are some key points about the EBF:

  • Foundation: The EBF is based on shared values and principles built with stakeholders, professionals, and industry leaders, promoting a shared language for ecological benefits.

  • Purpose: The EBF is used to enhance impact decisions and to measure and report the environmental and ecological benefits achieved by various entities.

  • Collaboration: It's often utilized by organizations, including blockchain initiatives, as a tool to standardize reporting and reward efforts that contribute to environmental sustainability across the value chain.

  • Comprehensive Assessment: The EBF evaluates benefits related to ecosystems, climate, equity, and atmospheric carbon, among other factors, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the positive impact of various activities on the environment.

In summary, EBF serves as a valuable tool for assessing and reporting the positive environmental and ecological impacts of various initiatives and activities, promoting sustainability and accountability in these endeavors. EBF focuses on six ecological benefits: air, water, soil, biodiversity, equity, and carbon. Our hackathons will continue to align with the EBF framework.

Future Hackathons for Change

The hackathon described above is the first of many ReFi hackathons we aim to do. Next year we plan to do hackathons at 7 locations internationally.

May 18th and 19th EPIC Innovation Campus- New Zealand Located in the beautiful city of Christchurch. The modern, eco-friendly campus with state-of-the-art facilities and a focus on sustainability aligns well with the goals of the event. Hackathon themes will continue to be aligned with the ecological benefits framework and will be made locally relevant. Such as regenerative agriculture and sustainability, carbon offset trading and management, impact investing in renewable energy projects, tokenizing and financing sustainable supply chains and financial inclusion through Web3 technologies. We will partner with local web3 organizations to further empower this event.

August Sand Angel Shindig- USA Located in the high mountains of Colorado on a piece of land that was heavily exploited by industrial agriculture and has now become desertified, this hackathon will focus on the real world impact of regenerating landscapes using web3 technology. It will precede a music festival and during the music festivals hackers will have an opportunity to present to attendees and get even further support on what they have created. All the while the mountains surrounding will enable hackers to further connect with the work they are doing.

September Commons Hub- Austria The Commons Hub in Austria continues to be a place for radical innovation and ideas. Participants will gather in the midst of the Alps, in a singular hacker house, to think about and build solutions towards- the blind spots of regenerative finance. Throughout their time at the hacker house together, instead of competing with each other- this will be a collaborathon with rewards being distributed through how valuable people thought an individual's contributions were (using tools like Coordinape).

September, End Of Crypto Valley- Switzerland Zug, Switzerland continues to be one of the top places in the world for web3. However, upon walking around the area it is noticeable that it’s web3 dominated by lawyers, large scale infrastructure solutions, and wealthy elites. The challenge for this hackathon is to think about how we can utilize aspects of what made these projects so successful to push forward existing ReFi projects. Especially in what areas could ReFi improve to reach mass adoption.

October Traditional Dream Factory- Portugal A web3 ecovillage full of dreamers enacting real world change! Real world value and being able to further align how we hold and transfer value is what this hackathon is about. Participants will examine the ecovillage context in which they are, think about how web3 could be integrated in various systems and then implement it. This is about seeing how a global community can support an ecovillage and how an ecovillage can support a global community.

November Regenaissance Festival- Thailand A tree planting hardware hackathon. Crocodiles, deadly high temperatures and other dangers make it difficult to plant trees in some location. This hackathon is about how we can use hardware to plant trees instead of exposing people to the dangerous planting situations. The most trees planted in a designated amount of time wins!

COP29- TBD Continuing to bring Regenerative Finance to the COP scene. This hackathon will be a recap of the way the ReFi movement has progressed through the year and shine further light on the movement for people that could empower it further.
