The Ocean Literacy Traveling Fair is a lowbudget, mobile educational event under Escuelas Azules de México, designed to bring ocean literacy to children aged 4-12 in public spaces across Mérida Yucatán, San Francisco de Campeche, and Chetumal, Quintana Roo in Mexico. The fair features six engaging activities using recycled materials to foster awareness of marine ecosystems, particularly coral reefs. Each city hosts the event for one day, promoting handson learning and community participation.
Planned Activities:
- Coral Reef Puzzle – Children assemble a large, handpainted coral reef puzzle made from recycled cardboard while learning about coral species and their importance.
- Marine Life Matching Game – A fun memory game using bottle caps with ocean animals painted on them, teaching biodiversity and ecological roles.
- OceaninaBottle – Kids create mini ocean models using reused plastic bottles, learning about ocean layers and the impact of pollution.
- Fishing for Knowledge – An educational fishing game using magnets and recycled materials to teach sustainable fishing practices and bycatch reduction.
- Waves in Motion – A simple wave simulator using repurposed materials to demonstrate ocean currents and climate change effects.
- EcoFriendly Art Station – Children craft marinethemed artwork using waste materials, reinforcing creative recycling and ocean appreciation.
By utilizing accessible, sustainable materials and interactive learning, the fair encourages children to develop a lasting connection with marine conservation. This initiative aligns with the broader goals of Escuelas Azules de México to promote ocean stewardship and literacy in coastal communities.
The funds will be used to cover the transportation of materials and people, as well as accommodation and meals during travel between cities.
