At OpenLitterMap, we are turning cleaning the planet into a game with climate rewards.
Inspired by OpenStreetMap, we are building a real-time data collection layer that enables anyone to tag a photo of something, add a tag, and communicate their real-world story with the world.
By using our app, users earn Littercoin which can only be spent in the climate economy to tackle the plastic problem at source with economic incentives and climate stimulus.
After completing the OpenLitterMap research in 2015 and being introduced to the concept of tokenisation, the idea for Littercoin was born - a token produced geospatially through the production of geographic information.
Today, we have crowdsourced nearly 500,000 verified images of litter from 100 countries which will be used to train the OpenLitterAI and automate object detection creating a real-time gaming experience.
This year Littercoin moved from theory and concept to mainnet and production on 4/20. Upload just 100 images and get them past our team of volunteer admins to get economic access currently worth $2.40 in plastic-free zero-waste locally produced fruits and vegetables however significantly more work needs to be done to onboard merchants, develop the software and unlock humanities data collection capacity.
Littercoin is in the top 5% of all peer-reviewed papers tracked by Altmetric (n=21m)

By supporting this work, you will be supporting the development of open source real-world data collection technology that is empowering real people to tell their story about the real-world impact they are making in their communities.
All of our code is open source and we need support from more developers. Our open data enables anyone to participate in the science and we need help from more geospatial analysts and data scientists.
Litter is just the first application of our technology. We are developing real-time data collection infrastructure for the internet.
Join us and help clean the planet by empowering society to harness the power of our global abundance of technology with open source digital public goods!
