Developing digital tools using satellite data and AI for ecological monitoring, verification, and climate insurance, aimed at supporting small farmers and building a regenerative community in Kenya.

About Shamba

We are developing dMRV and associated tools to drive climate change adaptation and mitigation projects, focusing on small farmers. We are also building a Regen community across Kenya.

Our work

We use satellite data, geospatial analytics, and AI to monitor and report ecological state globally.

We run an ecological data oracle to provide the web3 ecosystem with on-demand ecological data. This data from our oracle is currently used for 2 purposes:

  1. Climate insurance.

Ecological data is used to assess risks over an area and this drives insurance and other climate resilience products.

An example of this is the Diva Donate pilot, a solution that provides finances to drought-affected communities through donation-driven insurance.

  1. Verification of regen projects

We are developing digital MRV tools for verification of ecological impact. Our goal is to provide an efficient and low-cost verification service optimized for small-scale projects.

We have been developing our dMRV solutions with the participation of smallholder farmers. The tools and solutions we have developed are designed to help farming communities manage regen projects. Over 6000 farmers have been onboarded to these tools with more on the waitlist.

Progress since GG18

We hosted the second edition of the annual ReFi Kenya festival in September. This is part of our outreach efforts to build a local regenerative community in the country. The festival brought together technology builders and land stewards to discuss how ReFi can scale across Kenya.

We consider community building to be an essential part of scaling regeneration projects. Festivals such as ReFi Kenya are laying the groundwork for an indigenous ReFi culture to spread countrywide. Part of the funds from our GG18 round went to supporting this festival which is planned to be even bigger next year.

Since the last round, we've also held meetings to onboard more small farmers onto the ReFi tools we've developed. The impact of all these outreach activities is that more people get to learn about and join regenerative projects.

What's next

We continue to develop our dMRV solution and test it locally. While aspects of it are ready (such as what is used for climate adaptation) parts of it are still a work in progress. In particular, we are still building and training models around carbon stock quantification for carbon credit verification. Our goal is to make this available as a service when it is ready, around Q1 2024.
