Romanian project WarmOFF seeks to develop an affordable, scalable electrochemical carbon dioxide removal system to reduce atmospheric greenhouse gases, aiming for an open-source, energy-efficient solution.

๐Ÿ‘‹ Hello! We are WarmOFF, a Bucharest, Romania-based project that wants to develop an efficient, scalable, reliable, and affordable carbon dioxide removal solution. Our project is focusing on the urgent need for climate solutions. Here at WarmOFF, we want to develop a carbon dioxide removal system and thus we focus on a public good- the air. We believe that we can create benefits not only to this ecosystem but to the entire world, by obtaining scientific breakthroughs in this area. We are starting as a research project and with YOUR help we can grow into a long-term, problem-solving project.

Here are some of the greatest minds reflecting on climate change:

โ€œClimate change is a terrible problem, and it absolutely needs to be solved. It deserves to be a huge priority.โ€ - Bill Gates

โ€œWhen the well is dry, we know the worth of water.โ€ - Benjamin Franklin

๐ŸŽฏWhat problem are we focusing on

-The main problem that we are trying to solve is one of great importance. The level of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere has reached record numbers due to the rapid development of mankind. Our ideology is that humans were made to consume lots of goods and services for a better and easier life, so we would like to offer the option to consume those without affecting our environment. This can be obtained by developing carbon dioxide removal technologies. The main problems that scientists in this space struggle with are energy consumption, capital and operational costs, so the average cost per ton of CO2 removed is around 300-600$ at the moment.

๐ŸŽฏWhat we do?

-Here, at WarmOFF, we are focused on developing carbon capture systems. For a long time, the progress in this area was unable to match the needs of our planet and so, we want to develop an efficient, scalable, reliable, and economically viable system. We aim to contribute to the push of the carbon capture industry away from the centralized carbon capture system from point sources to a more decentralized system where anyone can offset their carbon emissions. We want to do this by combining scientific research papers that are already published, with our collective knowledge for further improvements. At first, we will mainly focus on electrochemical processes because we see a lot of value there.

The process that we mainly focus on: using electrochemistry for applications of CO2 capture (CO2 capture using quinones as active material). We think that this process offers multiple advantages compared to other traditional types of processes that involve pressure or temperature swings, and so we want to research applications for this process.

 CO2 capture process using quinones

๐ŸŽฏWhat do we want to obtain?

-Our focus will be on testing and improving different types of carbon capture systems. Our main objective is to develop a carbon dioxide removal technology that fits the needs of our time. This means that our system should be energy efficient, scalable, and reliable. The electro-swing capture system should offer these advantages compared to the traditional methods. Our final goal would be to create an open-source IP for everybody to see, test and further improve.

Main areas of focus:

-choosing the best process -choosing the best reagents -developing different types of systems based on this process -developing a system where the process has the efficiency around the theoretical max value -developing a scalable system -testing in different types of environments -testing different types of use-cases -further developing the carbon dioxide removal industry

๐Ÿ’ธFUNDRAISING

Our goal would be to raise around $7.000-$10.000. This money will mainly go towards the materials needed for multiple trials with different reagents, and scaling up the system. Only Around 25-35% of the money will go towards hardware because some of the laboratory equipment will be provided at first by the academic groups from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest and the National Institute for Research & Development in Chemistry and Petrochemistry. Also, we are looking to employ more staff depending on the funding level that we reach. If we hit our goal of $10.000 we will be a total of 3-4 staff members. Also, as a reference, around $10.000 should give us a run rate of around 3 months.

Also, our plan is to participate in as many grant rounds as we need to reach our goals!

๐Ÿ“ˆProgress:

  • we self-funded the project since Dec. 2022
  • we already developed the composite used for CO2 capture but at a small scale ( 1 cm2 electrodes)
  • we tested different types of reagents
  • we are on track to test the electrochemical properties of the composite
