Launching Japan's first DeSci community for students, focusing on democratizing science access, and fostering student-driven research through interviews, pitch contests, and a hackathon.

DeSci Japan Youth, just launched in April 2023, is the first DeSci community in Japan that mainly targets students. Through our projects, we aim to solve problems faced by students who actually aspire to do research. It also has the following mission, values, and vision ##Mission:. Expanding and Supporting DeSci-approach of students, by students, for students. ##Value:. Opening up science to those without capital and power ##Vision:. All disciplines are open to all students without any constraints.

Projects to be executed

Interview Project

Currently, we are in the stage of disseminating the concept of DeSci by experts in Japan. The next step is to ask people of various backgrounds for their thoughts, opinions, and ideas about DeSci. And we must not only listen to their opinions, but also record them and disseminate them to the world. This is because in order to literally embody decentralized science, it is important to first visualize what many people think about the state of science, and then to have someone receive and spread those visualized ideas in a ripple effect.

Student Pitch Contest Project "mini DeSci

Pitch contests using crowdfunding have been held in many places. However, few people in Japan have actually had the experience of holding a wallet and using NFT to support researchers. The diversity of the contest judges was also taken into consideration to reflect the real world, and by verifying the contest on a small scale, we can expect DeSci to serve as a simulation that can be applied to the real world as a whole. For students, the experience of having their research recognized in a different way and actually winning funding is expected to motivate them to do more research.

Hackathon

As a further step, we are planning a hackathon for students to generate ideas for better social implementation of the DeSci concepts and to develop hands-on systems and applications. Through thinking of what kind of products are needed to solve problems in the research environment through the DeSci approach by students, It is expected to help discover the next generation of DeSci players who will lead the future of DeSci. As such, we aim to be the first practice-oriented DeSci organization in the world and will challenge ourselves daily to become the leading and supporting organization for the DeSci community worldwide in the near future.
