Colorado non-profit addresses food insecurity by rescuing surplus food and redistributing it to families in need, promoting sustainability and community engagement with the help of volunteers.

Joy’s Kitchen is a Colorado-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to addressing food insecurity and food waste at the grassroots level. With the help of our 420-strong volunteer force, we rescue, sort, and distribute food to thousands of families in need across the state. By providing nourishing groceries, fostering a supportive environment, and promoting sustainable practices, we build meaningful connections and empower change within our communities.

Our mission is to rescue and redistribute surplus food to combat climate change and create a more sustainable and compassionate world. Through the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and supporters like you, we’ve been able to provide meals for over 6,000 families per month in Colorado. But there are still more families in need, and we need your help to reach them. Your generous donation can make a real difference in the lives of those who are struggling with food insecurity in our community.

In Colorado, a staggering 42% of food in retail chains ends up as waste, primarily due to overproduction. Limited store space, high consumer demands, and the pursuit of perfect-looking products contribute to this issue.

Unsold food, amounting to over 80 billion pounds annually in America, is discarded in landfills. According to the nonprofit ReFED, more than a third of all food grown for human consumption in the United States never reaches a plate. This wasted food represents $408 billion worth of resources, grown on 18% of U.S. farmland and using 4 trillion tons of water.

We envision a world where no one goes hungry, and food is used wisely. Our purpose is to support food security, promote environmentally-conscious practices, and shape the future by inspiring change.

Our primary goals include:

Rescuing and redistributing nutritious food to over 6,000 families per month, ensuring access to wholesome meals for those in need. Collaborating with local businesses, donors, and volunteers to support our food rescue efforts and community programs. Educating and raising awareness about food waste, hunger, and sustainable practices to inspire individual and collective action. Promoting inclusivity, community engagement, and shared responsibility in addressing food security and environmental challenges.

By focusing on these goals, Joy’s Kitchen strives to make a lasting impact on the lives of families in Colorado, fostering a sustainable and compassionate community for generations to come.
