This project is essentially a “fact checker” that places frontline communities directly at the "giving table" in the role of directing funding efficiently. They can then build capacity, implement effective climate resilience strategies, and respond to climate-related risks more robustly. We know from our research and the contributions of others that 1) divested communities are often the target populations for climate and social justice giving; 2) yet these promises are often not kept or diverted out of these communities; 3) there is no consistent way to track these fund; and 4) the communities rarely have any meaningful input in these processes. We want to create a solution.
Deliverable: The tool facilitates partnerships between frontline communities and businesses, intergovernmental organizations, and international funders. By bridging the gap between these stakeholders via tracking, data aggregation, and direct feedback, we will inject accountability and transparency into an opaque ecosystem. The outcome should be more efficiency, enhanced access to these resources for the targeted communities, and better collaboration.
The “Why”: There is no transparency in environmental and social justice giving, nor is there a feedback loop between donors and targeted communities. Transparency is diluted to nonexistent because of multiple subcontractors and middlemen controlling narratives about communities and funding. The end result is an opaque giving environment in which outcomes are unknown until you see media stories like this one, https://tinyurl.com/4r8rzn7a.
