A multi-track conference and hackathon in Barcelona focused on Ethereum, promoting education, innovation, and social impact with a diverse and immersive experience blending tech, art, and culture.

Overview: ETHBarcelona is a community-led conference and hackathon supporting education and community building in the Ethereum ecosystem.

Our goal is to make this gathering a platform for exploring the intersection of web3 tools (DeFi, DAOs, Metaverse, ZK, L2s, and others) and human culture to address pressing issues such as inequality (onboard the unbanked), surveillance, centralization, climate change, and social injustice. We are confident that the program will provide valuable insights and a thought-provoking experience for all attendees.

In its first edition, it brought over 2.2k people from all over the world, becoming one of the largest Ethereum events in Europe and one of the few with content in three languages (English, Spanish, Catalan). The last edition had a focus on education, innovation, culture, art, and creating positive social impact.

This year we plan to have a solarpunk and lunarpunk conference + hackathon with the following tracks:

  1. Culture & Art
  2. Web3 Social
  3. DAOs
  4. DeFi & Dapps
  5. Metaverse & Gaming
  6. Public Goods, Impact, Education
  7. Infrastructure & Ethereum Scalability
  8. Privacy ZK

Beyond the traditional conference sessions and the hackathon, we are excited to create again like last year, an immersive experience that merges music, digital art, and interactive activities into the event. We will be providing co-working spaces and other areas for attendees to participate in activities such as yoga, mindfulness, and sound healing, creating a holistic and well-rounded experience.

ETHBarcelona is not like any other conference, bringing a unique, uplifting vibe to the community to keep building and solving the many difficult technical and social layer challenges. This was accomplished last year with the grass stages, impact dedicated sponsor area, chill room, and live music at all times. We will continue to innovate on the experience that fosters the best of vibes :)

We can’t really describe the vibe and the quality of the event with words. The videos help, but even they don’t do full justice. Take a look here: https://www.youtube.com/@ethbarcelona

ETHBarcelona contributes to significant public good generation in multiple ways:

Education: At the most comprehensive level, the conference is all about education, a critical public good to catalyze the generation of all others. An entire track of speakers and workshops will be dedicated to highlighting Public Goods specific projects. All the talks will also be live-streamed, recorded, and shared on YouTube to extend this education to those remote and unable to join the talks live as well. Additionally, any tech providers we work with to enhance the conference experience we hope to be open sourced as well.

Some specific examples from last year:

  2. Oportunidades y retos para las mujeres de habla hispana: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QLMeueougc&list=PLM2PlpkPyjSFCbSIQ0b_vGJQEMJ_GRvUv&index=19

Diversity and Community Building: We also want to continue to address the problem that in our space most of the web3 events are bringing mostly males. We brought huge diversity to our last edition where almost 40% of the attendees were women and 50% of the speakers (https://ethbarcelona.com/speaker).

We also brought a huge amount of new potential builders and participants into our ecosystem by partnering up with multiple universities and bootcamp schools. For every ticket sold, we gave free tickets to students and to people that want to contribute to the space but might not have the means to afford a ticket.

Sustainability: As with last year's event, we want to continue being environmentally friendly through a plastic-free policy and offsetting our carbon footprint.

We will also continue collaborating with the Ethereum Foundation to incorporate Quadratic Funding to distribute a pool of proceeds from ticket sales and matching donations to impact organizations

Current Status and Milestones: As mentioned, we already completed the inaugural edition of ETHBarcelona with great success in 2022, so much so that leaders in the space such as Nader from the AAVE/Lens team tweeted to be “blown away [...], cemented already in [his] mind as a top tier event” ( https://twitter.com/dabit3/status/1546269218227863553).

Now, we have begun the process to call for speakers, workshop moderators, cultural experience partners, and hackathon organizers. We already have around 300 applications for speakers, and we are still about 3 months away from the event. Last year we had 700 applications.

This year we are also taking a special focus on attracting builders with the hackathon. We already have a telegram group of over 700, mostly engineering students, of which over 400 have already submitted applications for free tickets.

The summarized roadmap and milestones surrounding the event is as follows:

February - April: -- Sponsors outreach and confirmation -- Partner outreach and confirmation -- Call for speakers, workshop moderators -- Call for hackers, mentors, judges -- Call For impact projects

April - June: -- Ticket sales -- Content curation (speakers, workshops) -- Curation of hackathon bounties

July 5-7: ETHBarcelona Conference

July 7-9: ETHBarcelona Hackathon

July 9-31st: --Donation voting and distribution to impact projects (QF round again together with the Ethereum Foundation) -- Event Recap Communications
