GoodDollar is fundraising to support GoodCollective, a platform that offers direct payments for climate action initiatives, integrating technology to facilitate environmental stewardship and sustainability, piloting in Brazil and Kenya.

// TLDR

[GoodDollar] (http://www.gooddollar.org) is a universal basic income protocol with a vision any person to access a digital, sustainable universal basic income.

For Gitcoin Round 18 (Climate Solutions), we are raising funds to support GoodCollective, a platform that supports climate impact initiatives through enabling direct digital payments to individuals who perform verified climate stewardship.

Environmental stewardship of local communities in key conservation areas will create a significant impact in preventing the depletion of natural resources. GoodDollar has partnered with Appropriate Design, dOrg and the Climate Collective to build GoodCollective, a dapp that support sustainable environmental practices at the local level, with a focus on direct payments to the individuals doing the work. The GoodCollective platform and its 2 pilot deployments provide direct payments to those verifiably safeguarding and preserving their local habitat. The mission of GoodCollective deeply aligns with GoodDollar’s mission to deliver digital money to those who need it most and Climate Collective’s objective to utilize trusted, sustainable digital infrastructure to unlock verifiable climate action at scale.

// Why Support GoodCollective?

GoodCollective is currently live and being used to support two first of its kind pilots which link automated digital payments to verified stewardship efforts. The first two live deployments (currently in action) are DeTrash in Brazil to support recycling, and Silvi in Kenya which supports reforestation.

We defined criteria to ensure our pilot partners have the mission alignment, community reach, and operational setup required for success. We chose to work with DeTrash/Neduc and Silvi as our first partners to pilot GoodCollective as a complement to their respective stewardship and climate impact programs. Each partner has a track record in pioneering environmental impact initiatives, and our pilot design aims to amplify their efforts through incentivization via G$ payments.

Based on extensive research into the socioeconomic factors of each region and the need for geographical variety, implementation of targeted UBI payment distribution follows pilots in Coroadinho, a neighborhood in São Luís, Brazil, and the Kakamega forest in Western Kenya.

In select areas of Brazil, Peru, and Israel, DeTrash is a technology platform that compensates community members and recycling facilities for recycling, upcycling, and composting. Neduc, a women-owned and operated social enterprise, is a local partner to DeTrash, and diverts plastic from landfills by turning it into practical goods.

Silvi operates in the US and Kenya to reforest high-impact areas with native trees. We have partnered with them on their work in the Kakamega forest in Western Kenya, which focuses on stewardship of native tree genealogy, reforestation, and biodiversity preservation. Silvi enlists local community members — typically farmers living near target areas — to participate in restoration activities and measure their progress. Both pilot partners have a deep and direct relationship with the communities they serve and are committed to accurately measuring climate impact.

// How Will the GR 18 Funds Be Used?

  • Fund Conservation Basic Income and G$ payouts for two existing pilots and existing 40+ stewards currently performing climate action in Brazil and Kenya
  • Fund the conservation basic income and program management costs of upcoming deployments and partners
