Green Planet Conservation Initiative is an organization that promotes environmental conservation, sustainable practices and education through its green project initiative that is focused on agroforestry, reforestation, regenerative agriculture, and climate change awareness programs in Schools and local communities. We aim to create a more sustainable future for the next generation through our initiatives. We strive to leave a positive impact on the world and inspire future leaders to continue the mission of protecting the environment.
Through a partnership with the Federal College of Forestry Jos, We discovered Pterocarpus erinaceus, commonly known as African Rosewood, a valuable and endangered species of tree native to Nigeria and Sahelian region of West Africa but due to over-exploitation and habitat loss, this species is at risk of extinction. GPCI aims to leverage our green project initiative to create a transparent, equitable, and collaborative ecosystem for the conservation of African Rosewood and other critical environmental initiatives.
Goals and Objectives
- Environmental Conservation • Goal: To restore and protect natural ecosystems, with a particular focus on reforestation, agroforestry, and the preservation of endangered species. • Objective: Implement large-scale tree planting and reforestation projects, focusing on native and endangered species like Pterocarpus erinaceus (African Rosewood).
- Sustainable Practices • Goal: To promote and implement sustainable agricultural practices that enhance soil health, biodiversity, and climate resilience. • Objective: Support and educate communities on regenerative agriculture and agroforestry practices that improve ecosystem services and food security.
- Climate Change Awareness • Goal: To raise awareness and educate the public on the causes, effects, and solutions to climate change. • Objective: Conduct educational programs in schools and communities, emphasizing the importance of conservation, renewable energy, and sustainable living.
- Research and Innovation • Goal: To advance scientific research in environmental conservation and sustainability using innovative tools and methodologies. • Objective: Partner with academic institutions like the College of Forestry Jos to conduct research on ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, and the impacts of climate change.
• Problem Nigeria and the wider West African region are experiencing severe environmental challenges, including deforestation, biodiversity loss, and climate change. Unsustainable land use practices, such as illegal logging and slash-and-burn agriculture, have led to the degradation of critical ecosystems. Pterocarpus erinaceus (African Rosewood), an important and valuable species, is now endangered due to over-exploitation and habitat destruction. These environmental issues not only threaten the region’s biodiversity but also undermine the livelihoods of local communities that depend on forest resources. Additionally, there is a significant gap in public awareness and education on sustainable practices, which hinders efforts to address these environmental challenges effectively.
• Solution
The Green Planet Conservation Initiative (GPCI) seeks to tackle these challenges through a comprehensive approach that combines reforestation, conservation education, and sustainable land management practices. The project will focus on restoring degraded landscapes by planting native and endangered species, particularly African Rosewood, and implementing agroforestry systems that promote biodiversity and improve soil health. We are working closely with local communities, schools, and government institutions to raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable practices. By integrating decentralized Measurement reporting and verification which is one of (DeSci) principles, We are using blockchain technology to track, verify, and share the progress of its conservation efforts, ensuring transparency and fostering global collaboration.
The Green Planet Conservation Initiative’s adoption of blockchain technology represents a forward-thinking approach to solving the challenges of the climate crisis and environmental conservation. By promoting transparency, collaboration, and inclusivity, GPCI aims to create a fair and equitable ecosystem that not only preserves Pterocarpus erinaceus but also serves as a model for conservation efforts worldwide. Through our partnership with the Federal College of Forestry Jos, GPCI is demonstrating how innovative approaches like DeSci can lead to meaningful and lasting impact in the fight against environmental degradation and biodiversity loss.
Update Since GG20 we have been able to carry out our campaign in five schools and a local community We reached out to them with our awareness creation and tree planting exercise. We also employed the use of dMRV for our planted trees. We planted 46 trees onchain within this period. We also entered into a partnership with the College of Forestry in Jos to re-introduce a species of tree, Pterocarpus erinaceus going into extinction, which was among the trees we planted after GG20. We were able to secure approval to reach out to more public schools, and we are hoping to commence another batch of tree planting in September 2024. So far, we have been able to cover 15 schools and a local community, reaching out to about 6,000 students since the beginning of 2024. Some of the species of trees planted include Pterocarpus erinaceus, Canarium Schweinfurthii, Terminalia mentalis, Mangifera Indica, Hura crepitan, terminalis catappa.
