Our Story Having experienced the tragedy of losing both parents and two brothers in a car accident in 2006, I worked for several years as a farm laborer. These challenges lead me to create community based farm that could feed the most vulnerable people in my community and empower
Homa Bay County is former Nyanza province in Western Kenya, on the edge of Lake Victoria. Unfortunately, many people live hand to mouth and there are high cases of starvation around Homa bay. The fact of the project is, that immediately after my mom and dad plus other family members including two brothers died in a road accident in the year 2006. From 2007 up to 2018, I was working as farm laborer on different farms in different communities in Homa Bay County, I was working as a labour on the farm for 12 years as a Labour. During was an experience more difficult lifestyle I use to do my money-saving from my salary from the farm work. I did that for those years, and the total money I saved for preparation sting our the project was $1000, out of that money from the year 2018. I decided to start a community-based farm project, after seeing some of the challenges and hardships that many of my community members are undergoing in terms of starvation malnutrition, and hunger.
The Team We are a team of 9 workers, 4 men and 5 women.
Production Cost Each of the workers I used to pay $40 every month. They help with the farm activities such as transplanting the seedling and other farm activities. In our community project, we introduce growing a good number of fruits and vegetables that can support a good number of vulnerable populations around the community. We plan to grow more kale, spinach, onions, tomatoes, pumpkins, watermelon jack fruits, sour fruit, mangoes, bananas, avocado, and passion fruits.
The kawagumba village community project has already been supporting the different people within and around our community through the supply of food to vulnerable community members. Each year we are supporting ten widows as well as some students. All of this we are doing through management from the sales of our products from the farm. Currently, we are working on rental land agreements. A good number of our community members have seen the positivity that the project has brought and they have fully accepted the idea and even at times they do help in farm management operation when needs be.
The project not only focuses on supporting those within our community but also those from nearby communities.
