MOOS, a Berlin-based cultural centre, focuses on creative crisis management, empowering disadvantaged groups, and fostering civic cooperation through a residency program, events, and a performance art-based learning community exploring urban citizenship and digital governance.

MOOS is a cultural centre located in Berlin, which stands for the creative handling of crises, cooperation between different civic actors, and the empowerment of socially disadvantaged groups. We have a 280sqm events hall below a new-build 400sqm residency with nine bedrooms, seven bathrooms, four living rooms and a rooftop.

MOOS (pronounced ‘moss’) has become a node in the web3 regenerative placemaking scene, and in 2023 hosted organisations such as Funding the Commons, Cohere Network, Oasa, Regens Unite, Hackerhouse, Feytopia, Gitcoin Schelling Point and Regen Tribe, just to name a few.

In 2024 we aim to stride with even more confidence into hosting those that are exploring new approaches to funding, governing and building our cities. This is made up of three parts: a residency programme, a schedule of events and a learning community based on performance art.

We are running a rolling one year Citymaking Residency linked to key events happening in the hall which can be seen as the stage for engaging audiences on prototyping activities from the house residents above. Hundreds of people joined crypto-related residencies at Moos in 2023 and this co-living experience is an extended residency which places particular importance on giving back to the local community and wider city.

Alongside the Citymaking Residency, Dark Matter Labs will lead an event schedule which includes topics including Tokenising Communities & Property, Decentralised Governance, On-chain Smart Houses, Privacy-focused wearables and memberships, and much more to emerge. We regularly host many events around Berlin Blockchain week in September so this will continue to be a key time in our calendar.

Thirdly we aim to host a 9-month experimental performance art piece as a learning community. The topic of 2024 will be 'Ways of Being' as the group questions at monthly meetings what it is to be citizens within an entangled urban environment and what computational bureaucracies we may require to thrive against forthcoming challenges. The performance utilises virtual reality headsets and AI chatbots to place people into the digital bodies of other humans and more-than-humans to engage in governance games that explore our biases and priorities.
